Deep Dive: The "Dummy Customer" Paradox in 3PL Integration – Stop Sabotaging Logistics with Header Texts
Logistics requirements in 3PL-integrated landscapes are unforgiving. The business throws a simple requirement on the table: we must transmit Value-Added Services (VAS, e.g., custom packaging for EWM) and Equipment specifications (e.g., a Tail Lift for TM) to an external 3PL provider via EDI.
For standard B2B clients, the S/4HANA architecture handles this elegantly. We rely on Master Data: EWM determines the PackSpec based on the Ship-To Party, and TM fetches equipment constraints from Location Profiles. The system flows seamlessly.
The architecture fractures the moment we hit a CPD account (One-Time / Dummy Customer). You are dealing with a single, generic Business Partner number. You cannot hang order-specific Master Data on it without overriding the logistics parameters for thousands of subsequent one-off transactions. The standard data model breaks down, and implementation teams panic.
The Anti-Pattern: The Header Text Illusion (Z-Code Hell)
Lacking a Master Data hook, the average functional consultant takes the path of least resistance and falls back on Sales Order Header Texts. The user is instructed: "Just type 'tail lift + pack in blue boxes' in the free text, and we will send it to the 3PL."
This is an architectural crime...
