The European e-invoicing landscape is no longer a localized issue; it is a continent-wide architectural overhaul. With France’s phased B2B go-live reshaping domestic flows and Germany actively preparing its own mandates (e-Rechnung), relying on fragmented, country-specific add-ons is a recipe for system collapse. SAP Document and Reporting Compliance (DRC) has shifted from being a "nice-to-have" dashboard to the mandatory foundation of your SD and FI billing architecture.

> **Applicable Systems:** SAP S/4HANA Cloud, SAP S/4HANA On-Premise, SAP ECC (via DRC add-on). **Verification Link:**[Global SAP Document and Reporting Compliance (DRC)](https://www.sap.com/products/financial-management/document-reporting-compliance.html?ref=s4journal.com)

**\[SCOPE BOUNDARY: WHO ACTUALLY NEEDS THIS?\]**

- **Who must implement:** Any enterprise engaged in B2B transactions within countries adopting Continuous Transaction Controls (CTC), such as France, Germany, Italy, Poland (KSeF - pending), and Romania. If your Company Codes operate in these regions, DRC is your baseline.
- **Who can skip it:** Companies strictly operating in B2C e-commerce (where mandates often exclude consumer invoices) or those operating entirely outside jurisdictions with active electronic invoicing laws.

**\[THE ARCHITECTURE\]** Implementing e-invoicing is not just about generating an XML file. It completely alters the Output Management flow in SAP.

1. **The Engine (`EDOC_COCKPIT`):** Standard SD Billing (`VF01/VF04`) or FI Invoicing (`FB70`) no longer directly triggers a PDF to the customer. Instead, it generates an intermediate eDocument.
2. **Output Management (`BRF+`):** You must configure the S/4HANA Output Parameter Determination to recognize specific billing types and route them to the DRC framework rather than standard print queues.
3. **The Mapping (AIF):** The SAP Application Interface Framework (AIF) maps standard S/4HANA billing data into complex local XML structures (e.g., Factur-X for France, ZUGFeRD/XRechnung for Germany).
4. **The Transmission (Peppol / BTP):** The XML is sent via SAP Integration Suite (formerly CPI) using the Peppol Exchange service directly to the national tax authority portals.

**\[BS ALERT\]** Do not let external providers sell you standalone, bolt-on reporting portals. Decoupling e-invoicing from your core ERP will destroy your SD billing flows. Pushing raw billing data to a third-party black box means your SAP system loses the real-time status of the invoice (e.g., Rejected by Tax Authority). Integrate natively via DRC and BTP to keep your standard SD/FI document flow intact and fully traceable within the SAP GUI.
