EU CSRD & "Green Ledger": Carbon Footprint in SD/MM
The Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) is no longer a future concept—it is active EU law. Starting with reports due in 2025/2026, the EU requires large companies (over 250 employees, or >€50M turnover) to report Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions. Soon, it will cascade down to their B2B suppliers.
Applicable Systems: SAP S/4HANA (Green Ledger / Sustainability Footprint Management). Verification Link:European Commission: Corporate sustainability reporting
[THE ARCHITECTURE] How do you actually configure a "carbon footprint" in SAP SD? It is not just a text field.
- SAP SFM (Sustainability Footprint Management) calculates the exact CO2 equivalent per material based on production and transport data.
- SD Pricing Procedure (
V/08): Architects map this footprint into the SD billing document using Statistical Condition Types (e.g., a custom condition likeZCO2). - The Trigger: The condition does not add to the Net Value (it's statistical), but it allows the CO2 metric to be legally printed on the output invoice (Output Management) and passed to FI-CO to satisfy CSRD audits. If you operate in countries with a Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), this condition can be flipped to a non-statistical tax condition to actually charge the customer for emissions.
[HARD RECOMMENDATION] If you are designing a new pricing procedure in S/4HANA, reserve a block of condition steps explicitly for environmental metrics. Retrofitting CO2 statistical conditions into a massive, live pricing procedure later will break your subtotal logic.
